Community Services

At the Kittery Lions Club, we believe that independence and health are fundamental rights, not privileges. Since 1949, we have served as a vital resource for Kittery and our neighbors, providing local solutions to global humanitarian challenges. Whether we are preserving the gift of sight, restoring mobility through our equipment loans, or connecting neighbors with essential hearing care, our goal is to ensure no one in our community has to go without the tools they need for a dignified, independent life.

The Lions Mobility & Medical Equipment Program

Restoring Independence, One Neighbor at a Time

Mobility is the cornerstone of independence. As part of our global mission to improve the quality of life for those with disabilities and health challenges, the Kittery Lions Club maintains a robust lending library of durable medical equipment.

We believe that financial barriers should never stand in the way of a neighbor’s recovery or their ability to move safely through the world.

What We Offer: Through the generosity of our community, we provide a variety of high-quality, sanitized equipment for temporary or long-term loan at no cost to you, including:

  • ♿️ Wheelchairs & Transport Chairs

  • 🚶 Walkers (Standard & Rolling with seats)

  • 🩼 Crutches & Knee Scooters

  • 🛁 Bath Safety Benches & Shower Chairs

  • 🧺 Bedside Commodes

How to Access Support: Our clubhouse at 117 State Road is a fully accessible facility. You are welcome to stop by during our dedicated equipment hours to browse our inventory or pick up a requested item.

The Vision Initiative: Preserving the Gift of Sight

A Legacy of Visionary Service In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights of the Blind," and the Kittery Lions have answered that call since 1949. Vision is one of our primary Global Service Pillars. We believe that no child should struggle in school and no senior should lose their independence simply because they cannot afford proper eye care.

How We Help You Today:

If you or a family member in the Kittery or York community is in need of eyeglasses but faces financial barriers, we are here to help.

  • Financial Assistance: We offer support for the purchase of prescription eyeglasses for those in need.

  • How to Apply: To request assistance, please call our clubhouse at 207-439-3378 and leave a detailed voicemail. A member of our Sight Committee will return your call to guide you through the application process.

Recycling for a Global Impact: Have old, unused eyeglasses or hearing aids? Don't throw them away. We collect thousands of pairs of glasses annually, which are cleaned, sorted by prescription, and sent to developing nations to provide sight to those in need.

Drop-Off Locations: You can donate your unused eyeglasses, hearing aids, or even old cell phones at any of our "Lions Blue Boxes" located throughout the Seacoast:

  • Kittery: Lions Clubhouse, Town Hall, Post Office, Kittery Eye (Rt 1), Community Center, Rice Library (Annex), Kittery Estates, Meetinghouse Village, and Kennebunk Savings Bank.

  • York: Senior Center, Post Offices (Beach & Harbor), York Library, York Family Eye Care, and the Baldwin Center.

  • Wells & South Berwick: Wells Hannaford, York Hospital (Wells), and the South Berwick Community Center.

Our Global Connection: Every pair of glasses collected in Kittery contributes to the Lions Recycle for Sight program. Locally, our Annual White Cane Drive (held every April) raises the critical funds necessary to sustain these vision screenings and financial aid programs.

The Hearing & Speech Initiative: Restoring the Power of Sound

Our Purpose: Breaking the Silence of Isolation Communication is what connects us to our families, our work, and our community. When hearing loss goes untreated, it often leads to social isolation and reduced quality of life. As part of our commitment to global health and disability support, the Kittery Lions Club works to ensure that hearing health is accessible to all our neighbors, regardless of their financial circumstances.

How We Help You Today: We understand that navigating hearing healthcare can be overwhelming. To provide the best possible care for our community, we partner with local specialists who share our mission of service.

Professional Assistance: If you are in need of hearing aid assistance, we provide direct referrals to our trusted partner, Hearing Essentials in York, Maine

How to Reach Out: You can contact Hearing Essentials directly to discuss your needs and mention your connection to the Kittery Lions Club:

Address: 316 US-1, York, ME 03909

Phone: 207-703-0415

Financial Aid Inquiries: For questions regarding Lions-sponsored financial support for hearing devices, please call the Kittery Lions Clubhouse at 207-439-3378.

Recycling for a Global Impact: Like our vision program, we also collect used hearing aids. These sophisticated devices are refurbished and provided to children and adults in need around the world through the Lions Hearing Aid Recycling Program (HARP). You can drop off used hearing aids at any of our Lions Blue Boxes located throughout Kittery, York, Wells, and South Berwick.

Our Global Connection: By addressing hearing loss, the Kittery Lions support the global effort to reduce the impact of communication disorders. This work ensures that every member of our community has the opportunity to hear the world around them and participate fully in life.

The Environment Initiative: Bottles & Cans for a Cause

Turning Recycling into Relief The Kittery Lions are committed to the Lions International  Environment Pillar, protecting our local Seacoast ecosystem while simultaneously funding our humanitarian work. Our "Redemption for Relief" program is a community favorite that ensures thousands of pounds of glass, plastic, and aluminum are kept out of landfills and repurposed into life-changing donations for our neighbors.

How You Can Help: We make it easy for you to support our mission through your everyday recycling. Instead of heading to the redemption center, bring your returnables to the Pride!

Drop-Off Location: Look for the designated collection bins located at the Kittery Lions Clubhouse, 117 State Road.

What We Accept: All Maine-depository bottles and cans (Glass, Plastic, and Aluminum)

Where the Money Goes: 100% of the redemption value is funneled directly into our service budget. Your recycled water bottle or soda can helps fund:

  • Vision Screenings for local students.

  • Food Security initiatives for neighbors in need.

  • Disaster Relief efforts at home and abroad.

Our Community Impact: Our dedicated team of Lions sorts these donations by hand every week. This program isn't just about fundraising—it’s about sustainable service. By choosing to drop your bottles at the Clubhouse, you are directly investing in the health of our planet and the strength of the Kittery community.
